BE FESTIVAL - Wednesday - Main Programme 2019
BE FESTIVAL, Birmingham's international festival of arts returns this summer. Come and experience a diverse and exciting range of theatre, food and arts, whatever your taste.
Soul Seekers is a performance documentary by Mokhallad Rasem devised as part of the Beyond Borders project on the subject of migration. The piece was created after a six-week stay at an asylum centre in Menen, Belgium (where he was previously a resident) and subsequently at asylum centres in Paris and Valenciennes. Mokhallad worked with fellow refugees to make a performance and film documenting the fluctuating feelings of limbo and hope in difficult times.
Running time: 40 minutes
Supported by Amal - a Saïd Foundation programme.
Cie One Shot
Sometimes, particularly if you are wielding an axe, you only get one shot to get it right. Luckily Belgian duo Maxime Dautremont & Foucauld Falguerolles have got it down to a fine art (thank goodness). In their show One Shot, they present amazing feats of acrobatics amongst axe throwing and chinese pole technique, set to a live rhythm and blues score. You've only got one shot to see this show... don't miss it.
This performance is supported by Centre des arts de la rue (ath), la roseraie, Destelheide, Centre Culturel du Brabant Wallon, Waluculture, Espace Catastophe.
Running time: 40 minutes
Performance contains axe throwing.
Paula Rosolen/Haptic Hide
Forty years ago, singer of the Sex Pistols Johnny Rotten said "I wanna be anarchy" and thus punk rock was born. Punk was not just music, but a way of life. A rebellion against the status quo.
Today, choreographer Paula Rosolen questions what now remains of 'punk'; the visual language of which increasingly found and finds its way into the fashion world and mainstream culture. It playfully examines its roots in specific dance moves and makes unexpected connections with simultaneous developments in postmodern dance.
Supported by Kulturamt Frankfurt am Main, FAZIT-Foundation, Derida Dance Center Sofia and by NATIONALES PERFORMANCE NETZ International Guest Performance Fund for Dance, which is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Thanks to Apparat Athens. Special Thanks to J. M. Fiebelkorn and DRUMSTADT.
Running time: 60 minutes
Lycio combine distinctive vocals and pulsating electro-pop courtesy; this hybrid 3 piece from Birmingham share a charm and vibe with bands like London Grammar. Recent shows saw them supporting UK acts Rae Morris and Yonaka.
