War Veterans Put Actor Through His Paces

Actor Joseph Alessi entertained members of the National Malaya and Borneo Veterans Association in order to prepare for his performance in Privates On Parade.

The veterans sat back to watch Joseph’s performance in at press night – before the show Chairman Geoff Parkes said,

“Watching Privates On Parade will enable us to reminisce about the time when we were young and serving in Malaya, and will be a reminder of those young men who never returned. The productions staged at The REP are second to none and all those attending this performance will appreciate the contents of this play and the excellent way in which it will be portrayed by the cast.”

Set in 1948 and based on writer Peter Nichols’ own remarkable experiences in the Entertainment Corps, Privates On Parade is a truthful and affectionate account of those men who were sent to entertain troops fighting against communism during the often forgotten Malayan Emergency. Serving alongside Nichols were Kenneth Williams and Stanley Baxter, men who would go on to help shape the face of British Comedy.
