With three day, one day and half day workshops available in performance, design, songwriting, stand-up comedy, special effects, spoken word, stage combat, dance, puppetry and playwriting there really is something for everybody!
Each day of Project YOUtheatre includes daytime workshops, evening performances and a post-show open mic session for young performers. Tickets start at £10 for a one day pass or you can get a three day pass for just £20! Why not see which workshops tickle you fancy?
ALL THREE DAYS
3 Day Horror Performance Challenge (12.30pm to 5.00pm)
Are you interested in performing, writing, technical or anything else? Come and be part of an exciting unique workshop. Invisible Flock make big interactive experiences, installations and games. Join them for three days to create something new, something scary. It’s going to be all about horror. You’ll create a brand new play from scratch which will help you look at new ways of making theatre and using your skills to tell stories.
3 Day Horror Design Challenge (12.30pm to 5.00pm)
Working on the same intensive project across all three days of the festival, you’ll create a spooky set and bring nightmares to life! Working with Theatre Designer, Lucy Hammond, you’ll design a spine-chilling stage set for a final horror-themed performance on the last day. Sign up and let your imagination go wild…
1 Day Cinematic Theatre (Tuesday 12.30pm to 5.00pm)
Learn how to devise and create your very own film trailer with Tongue Tied Theatre Company! Jump cuts, close ups, action and slow motion sequences. These are all classic features of film, but how do we create these cinematic effects on stage? In this workshop participants will work together to create their own original film trailer using nothing but their bodies and voices. Using an inventive and cinematic style of physical theatre they will create all the characters, locations and cinematic editing. Even the soundtrack will be created live by the ensemble!
Improvised Musical (Tuesday 12.30pm to 5.00pm)
Have you ever done impro? Ever been in a musical? Well today you get the chance to combine the two! In this one day workshop, you’ll work with an actor and a musician from the award-winning show ‘Showstoppers the Musical’ to learn new improvisation techniques and create your very own improvised musical scenes.
Making Music For Horror Theatre (Tuesday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
You’ll collaborate with singer songwriter and actor Andrew ‘Skatz’ Scattergood to write a song suitable for a theatre piece with a horror theme. You’ll be able to choose to make it serious or comic and will get the choice to work all together or in small groups. You’ll then rehearse the song ready to perform it.
Special Effects (Tuesday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
Want to learn how to fake your own injuries in the lead up to Halloween? The REP’s Head of Wigs and Makeup, Andy Whiteoak will show you the techniques to create gruesome cuts and bruises that will fool everyone in this special effects make-up workshop!
Behind The Mask (Tuesday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
Working with Young REP Director, Rhys McClelland, and using exciting physical theatre techniques you will explore the world of the mask in performance. This workshop will be fun and physical – a chance to go behind the mask and create a character from the ground up.
1 Day Stand Up Comedy (Wednesday 12.30pm to 5.00pm)
Ever fancied yourself as a stand up comedian? Work with a comic in this one day workshop to find out how to get the laughs, build up to a punch line and get the audience giggling. Using the techniques you learn you will then have the opportunity to write your very own material.
Linguistic Gymnastics (Wednesday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
Deci4Life will take you on a rollercoaster ride of linguistic gymnastics and vocal pyrotechnics. Here you will learn techniques in lyrical architecture, flow, poetry and performance. This is two hours of fun for people at any level of lyrical writing. We’ll do games, writing exercises and finally polish our performances. So if you think you have a way with words and want to learn the art of semantic kung fu, join Deci4Life at this spoken word workshop.
Stage Combat (Wednesday (12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
Fiona King, The REP’s Education Officer, will help you discover some of the techniques used in choreographing fight scenes for the stage. During the session you will learn how to safely kick, punch, slap, strangle and pull someone’s hair. The session will culminate with you displaying your new skills to the group with your own choreographed short fight sequence!
Dance Theatre (Wednesday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
Working with dancers Sophie and Rebecca from Made Dance, you’ll learn new skills in contact improvisation. Contact improvisation is a form of dance somewhere between contemporary dance and physical theatre. This is a high energy workshop that will get you moving!
Flash Mob Theatre (Wednesday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
Working with Young REP Director, Tom Saunders, you’ll create a flash mob style performance, taking over spaces round the festival venue and creating surprises for the other participants!
1 Day Musical Theatre (Thursday 12.30pm to 5.00pm)
Could you be Nancy? Maybe you are Joseph? Or are you possibly the next Jesus Christ Superstar Strictly Come British Bake Off X Factor Ice Dancing Champion? In the world of Musical Theatre the possibilities are endless. Come along to this workshop run by experienced Musical Theatre Actor and Musical Director Daniel Summers and indulge in a fun packed day of singing, dancing and acting working towards a spectacular production number to be shown at the end of the day.
Script Writing (Thursday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
Ever wanted to write a script but not known where to start? Then this workshop is for you. You’ll work with playwright Arzhang Pezhman to create your own worlds and characters. We will have fun writing dialogue together as a group, as well as the chance to develop your own short scenes individually. By the end of the session you will have the beginnings of your own stage play, as well as loads of ideas to help you develop and finish off your story.
Puppetry (Thursday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
John Barber, puppeteer extraordinaire, will run exciting puppetry workshops for beginners. Starting with practical exercises in technique, you’ll then use these skills to put your puppetry into practice, creating short sketches using puppets from the John’s collection.
Dive Into Acting (Thursday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
Working with Young REP Director, Tom Saunders, you’ll develop your character and get in to the nuts and bolts of a scene in this quick and intensive two hour acting workshop. Add a range of recognised tools, skills and techniques to your arsenal for any future plays you perform in.
Costume Design (Thursday 12.30pm to 2.30pm or 3.00pm to 5.00pm)
Design and make your own costume in this fun and experimental costume design workshop with designer, Rachel Denning. We’ll use unusual materials to create garments and you’ll discover how using costume and your imagination, you can quickly transform a character to a different time or place, giving the impression of social status, profession, lifestyle, or nationality.
