Opportunity For Writers
Are you passionate to write a new play with a child or young person’s perspective at its centre? Birmingham Rep and Unicorn are partners in a new scheme to support four playwrights to create imaginative, moving and thought-provoking new work suitable for staging at both theatres.
What is it?
Over a year, as one of the four writers you will work with artists from Birmingham Rep and Unicorn to explore your ideas. You will attend performances and meet the Artistic and Participation / Education teams from each company as well as school students, youth theatre members and other young people involved in our work. A series of masterclasses from leading artists will explore the art and craft of writing with children and young people’s perspectives, together with a structured programme of one-to-one dramaturgical support. At the end of the year, extracts from each piece will be presented by the Unicorn’s acting Ensemble at special events in Birmingham and London. Travelling expenses and a bursary of £1500 for each writer will be provided.
Who can apply?
You need to be a writer based in England who can commit to attending events in Birmingham and London during the year. We are looking for emerging rather than established artists, but you will need to demonstrate some commitment and achievement as a writer, as well as set out why this is the right thing for you to be doing now. You may not have written for children or young people before, but you will also need to tell us why you have a passion for writing original work with a child or young person’s perspective.
How to apply?
Full information on how to apply can be found here. The deadline is 28 January 2011.
