Identity

Identity

Following on from the success of last year’s project, Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Telford Find Your Talent is embarking on the second leg of a theatrical exchange programme with Calgary Young People’s Theatre from Canada.

From 5 to 16 August this year, 12 young people from Telford and Wrekin aged between 14 to 16 years will be welcoming 9 Canadian young people from Calgary to live with them and perform together in a show based around the themes of similarities and differences.

The project, titled Identity is a ground breaking endeavour for Birmingham Repertory Theatre and CYPT and will be directed by former REP Youth Theatre Director Christopher Gorry. The workshops and performances will explore the connections and diversity between British and Canadian cultures. Students from both theatres will soon have experienced travelling across the world to live with, learn from, and create theatre with peers from another nation.

The REP’s Playwriting Officer Joshua Dalledone who is originally from Calgary developed the partnership with CYPT and last year he accompanied the 12 lucky Telford students on the trip to Canada on the first phase of the project.

The first half of the exchange witnessed participants not only create an commended piece of theatre but also forge international relationships with like-minded young people. It’s hoped that these relationships will be fostered and developed during the next stage of the project.

The visiting teenagers from Canada will each be paired with a young person from Telford and will be staying with a local family during their trip. The two week international exchange will culminate in the two groups performing individually and then coming together in a jointly devised performance that will be performed at Oakengates Theatre on 12 and 13 August.

Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s Playwriting Officer Joshua Dalledone, who is organising the project said:

“I’m thrilled to be embarking upon the second leg of this exciting theatrical exchange programme. Each of the young people involved in the project had a fantastic experience in Calgary last year and we’re looking forward to welcoming the Canadian students to the UK. We have been working hard as a group to prepare for the drama workshops that will be taking place during the visit and I’m certain this year’s joint performance will be just as successful as the last.”

This special project is one of many schemes run by The REP in Telford thanks to the partnership with Telford Find Your Talent which has helped to create arts opportunities for young people in Telford as well as organising events and activities which help to bring young people and families together.
